“Quidditch” Added to Oxford Dictionaries

Oxford’s English Dictionary has added a new word, and it’s exciting news for the wizarding world.

Oxford Dictionaries announced that “quidditch” snatched a spot in its English dictionary!

quidditch NOUN

mass noun trademark in UK A team sport played while straddling broomsticks, in which goals are scored by throwing a ball through any of three hoops fixed at either end of the pitch. ‘she's a multisport athlete who fell in love with quidditch’ [as modifier] ‘the university quidditch team plays in multiple tournaments each semester’

Origin Early 21st century: from the name of a magical game described in J. K. Rowling's 1997 novel "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone", on which the sport is based.
